How Our Live Edge Dining Room Tables Are Made
Logs are either rip cut or crosscut at a sawmill to make the slabs. Circular slabs, known as “cookies” or “discs” are made from crosscuts, and rip cuts make the longer live edge slabs.
After the wood is cut into live edge slabs, there is a big waiting period until it’s ready for use. Our live edge slabs typically air dry for 2 years or more before they’re moved to the kiln.
After air-drying, we move the slabs to our kiln where they will kiln dry for about a month. Drying is an essential part of the process to ensure the slabs don’t warp once they’re made into a table.
The slab is then transported to our table manufacturing facility where it is planed using our Wood-Mizer slab flattener. This basically planes the board so it has a smooth and finished surface.
Next, we use a wide belt sander to sand the surfaces of the slab. This gets all of the large bumps out of the slab.
After belt sanding, we use an orbital sander to give the slab as smooth of a surface as possible.
Next, we cut the table to size. This is typically cutting it to length to fit the customer’s specifications.
Now the tabletop is just about finished. The last step for the tabletop for many live edge tables is to finish the slab with stain or oil to give it some additional character.
This step is optional, and depends on the customer’s preferences. If they want the dining room table to be a perfect square or rectangle, we will put the table into a mold and pour epoxy around it. Many times epoxy is black or clear, but it comes in many colors.
The last step to every table build is installing the legs. Legs install in many different ways based on customer needs. Oftentimes we use metal legs that simply bolt on to the bottom of the table.
