Why Hickory Makes a Bold Statement
Hickory doesn't hold back. It ranks as the hardest and most physically dense domestic hardwood in our entire inventory, offering unmatched generational durability that outlasts nearly everything else.
The wood showcases a striking, unmistakable contrast between the deep, medium-brown heartwood and the pale, nearly white sapwood — creating a dramatic visual impact you won't find in subtler species.
Because of these extreme color variations, no two hickory slabs are ever alike, guaranteeing a completely custom, show-stopping centerpiece that nobody else will have.
Hickory's Unique Features
Hickory features wild, irregular grain patterns, often punctuated by natural bird pecks and mineral streaks, creating a highly sought-after calico aesthetic perfect for farmhouse or industrial spaces. With a Janka hardness rating of 1820, hickory is exceptionally hard, making it significantly harder than oak or maple and highly resistant to dents and scratches from daily abuse.
Because of its density, a hickory wood slab is the ultimate choice for environments that demand both rugged beauty and extreme resilience, from busy family kitchens to high-traffic commercial spaces.

Advantages of Choosing Hickory Slabs From Lancaster Live Edge
Hickory is one of the most challenging hardwoods to work with. Lancaster Live Edge can help you achieve beautiful, long-lasting results with our equipment and expertise. We offer:
- Expert milling services for dense hardwood: Because hickory is incredibly dense and difficult to mill at home, we highly recommend utilizing our professional in-house flattening, sanding and finishing services. We have the industrial equipment to handle hickory's extreme hardness, saving you time, frustration and potential tool damage.
- Direct-to-consumer sawmill pricing: We're a family-owned business operating as a sister company to Beiler's Sawmill, meaning we offer competitive, direct-to-consumer pricing on premium, heavy-duty hickory slabs without the middleman markup.
- Access to high-quality slabs: Our sawmill connection gives us access to wider, more dramatic hickory slabs that are harder to source through traditional lumber suppliers. Wider slabs are cost more due to their visual presence and limited availability, but our transparent pricing ensures you know exactly what you're paying.
- Specialization in rustic, character wood: We understand hickory's unique calico aesthetic and can guide you through selecting slabs with the right balance of bird pecks, mineral streaks and color contrast to match your design vision.
- A hand selection process: Schedule a weekday appointment to view our hickory inventory in person and hand-select your exact slab. See the wild grain patterns and color variations up close before you commit.
